Kratom trees can also be found more and more frequently in Germany. This is because their leaves can increase well-being. They are used to support pain treatment, libido improvement and blood sugar optimization. Find out what kratom is and how to grow it at home in our post.

What actually is Kratom?

Kratom are leaves from the kratom tree (Mytragina speciosa). They are mainly found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Papua New Guinea. Sometimes you can also find the leaves under the names Mambog, Biak, Krton, Mabog and Katawn. The leaves are usually available as a powder , but you can also buy them in capsule form. Dietary supplements have an impact on many bodily processes.

Kratom is legal in Germany. However, this only refers to the sale and consumption of the leaves. Concentrates made from the plant parts are illegal and may not be sold. In general, there is a ban on selling to pregnant women, on the Internet, in parks, schools and to minors.

What is kratom used for?

You can find a large number of supplements from the leaves on the Internet. This is because they are suitable for many purposes. The reason for this is that the parts of the plant contain psychoactive substances. They include 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine, two alkaloids. Both active ingredients have an analgesic effect. This means they are pain-reducing.

If you consume the leaves of the kratom tree in high amounts, you can achieve an opium-like effect. The substance has a sedative effect and stimulates the nervous system. This creates a feeling of euphoria and joy.

Dietary supplements with kratom have the following effects:

  • pain reduction
  • Regulation of blood sugar
  • Improvement in libido
  • mood lift

Growing kratom: what to watch out for

If you want to grow your own kratom, the very first thing you should know is what kind of soil a kratom tree prefers. Equally important is information about sowing kratom seeds. If all the conditions are optimal, the tree will thrive and be good for its age.

A weak point in cultivation, however, can be the winter. Low temperatures are not very beneficial for the plants. You can find out more about this in the next paragraphs. In these we tell you more about the sowing and the optimal growing conditions of Kratom.

sowing

When it comes to growing kratom, experience is key. You should be very careful, especially when choosing seeds. Only if you choose good quality seeds will you get good results. The freshness of the seeds also plays a role here. If you use older seeds, they will sprout poorly or not at all. Fresh seed is the best choice for this reason.

It is best to prefer seeds that belong to a species that also grows in non-tropical Central Europe. Some varieties of Kratom cannot tolerate the low temperatures in Germany and other Central European countries. So avoid buying these seeds unless you have a sunny conservatory. One variety that is well suited for planting in cooler areas is the Rabika variety.

Another advantage of Rabika is that it is easy to seed. You put the fine seeds in a substrate and distribute them there. It is important that you put a layer of soil on the substrate after planting.

Tip: Keep the seedlings in an area that is protected from strong winds and strong sunlight. The soil in which the plants thrive should be moist. Waterlogging should be avoided as it has a negative effect on plant growth.

Keep in mind that kratom seeds rarely germinate. The germination rate is around five percent. Therefore, it is important that you plant a larger amount of seeds.

hardiness

Kratom is a plant that is permanently green in its tropical home. In cold weather it can lose leaves. However, the plant usually recovers quite well from this once the winter is over. In the warmer seasons, it then drives out more new leaves.

To avoid leaf loss, keep your plants at a temperature above 15°C if possible. Interiors, conservatories or greenhouses are ideal for this. Once the colder season is over, you should move your plant outdoors. There it can usually grow optimally between May and September.

If the weather changes, you should be ready to quickly move your plant to a warm location. The use of plant bags is ideal for this. They are designed in such a way that the plant is not damaged during transport.

conditions of the soil

In order for your kratom plant to grow well, you should pay attention to the optimal soil conditions. In addition to pH (which should probably be around 5.5 and 6.5) and salt concentration, soil moisture is important. If the above factors are right, your plant will thrive.

It is important that you moisten the soil in which the plants sit well. Pay attention to an optimal water drainage, so that there is no waterlogging. Waterlogging causes difficulties, which in the worst case can lead to the death of the plants.

To ensure moisture transport, you should mix potting soil with bark mulch. The airy mixture makes it easier for water to drain away. Regular but careful fertilization of the plants is also beneficial. However, it should be done with care, as too much fertilizer can damage the plants.

When to harvest Kratom

Before fall begins, you should start harvesting the leaves of your plants. In autumn, the trees lose many leaves, which are then no longer usable. An added benefit of harvesting in late summer is that the leaves have enjoyed the sun for a long time. This makes kratom leaves rich in active ingredients . You can recognize leaves that are particularly rich in active ingredients by their red color.

If you want to harvest earlier, this is also possible without any problems. In such a case, you will get white or green kratom leaves that have a mild aroma.

For this reason, it is up to you when you harvest the plant leaves. Try harvesting at different times of the year. In this way you will be able to get kratom in the optimal dosage for you.

Conclusion

Kratom is an Asian plant that can also thrive in Central Europe under certain conditions. Between May and September, the plant feels comfortable outdoors. In winter and on colder days, however, the kratom tree should stay indoors at at least 15° C.

In Germany, the cultivation of the plant and the consumption of the leaves is permitted. However, concentrates with kratom are forbidden because they have a stronger effect and can sometimes lead to side effects.

However, if growing your own still seems too strenuous, Worldpower has just the right selection of kratom products for you!
